The first tip you’ll get when experiencing incontinence is to do Kegel exercises. Most of us know that the pelvic floor muscles have a lot to do with the ability to hold back the leaks. A lesser known fact is that the urinary system also depends on our nervous system to function normally. It’s the nerves in your body that transport the message from the bladder to the brain to let it know that the bladder is full. It also works the other way around: the nervous system ensures that the pelvic muscles know that the brain thinks it’s time to either tighten or release.
That’s why, for example, Parkinson’s, stroke, diabetes, multiple sclerosis or some sort of brain injury can result in an inability to control the bladder or empty it completely.
